And I had always been a big fan of Jan Hammer, the keyboard player that was playing with John McLaughlin and Mahavishnu Orchestra, and was doing all the Miami Vice themes at that time, the music for the show. And people didnt understand what that meant. AD: Oh no. Everything's electronic. Im just happy to be on the right track now, for once in a row. Because Id never met the singer, Id never met their drummer. AD: I am. "Just waking up in Vegas," he says. Aynsley recorded a cover of the Mojos hit, Everything's All right, and Bowie's huge hit, Rebel Rebel. But when you had that conversation, did you get the sense that they thought you were just going out on your own? And he said No, hes gotta do what hes gotta do. Is it safe to say that theres not communication between you anymore? I was kind of surprised. I dont know. Singers live on the edge of being powerful, being strong, and not degrading their voice, and its the most difficult edge to walk. But then we started playing again and I couldn't believe it! And we still waited, even though we had things goin on. He plays rhythm guitar and sings it for a while and we just add our parts to it. Because I am gonna get this done, eventually. But I needed to be ready to lay down and do this thing. I love his playing. Well, he did the same thing, way before we did! And look at the choices he had! We can all play crush rolls around the drum kit, and play every note possible in a drum fill, but it will just sound like mush to the average person. I like doing that sort of thing because I've got the technique to play it. Almost exactly like the panic I felt before I got into the band, Journey. And Im off Sony for the first time since 78. **. The Retaliation are rated by many blues aficionados as one the three greatest British Blues bands, along with Fleetwood Mac and John Mayall s Bluesbreakers. I was riding my Harley a lot, all throughout the San Joaquin Valley. Otherwise we dont think that we can ever get anything on the radio. They wanted us to get on the radio. Then I did the A Hard Road album with him, and that helped me understand the songs a little better. Its called a band! Which in those days was not good. Its amazing. I've been with them for about four years now. RM: Who were the drummers you were listening. I was the one who really wanted to do it. The bigger the drum, the more damping you put inside it, and so you're playing less area anyway. RM: Not too many rock drummers use 20" bass drums. But it's always interesting because he is a very good musician. While I was with him we did the Pinupsalbum, and Diamond Dogs. The more you play, the less they hear. Everybodys gone on to their own incarnations, and everybodys had success, but the truth is, there was a synergy that the band had, in the chemistry of writing and performing and arguing and recording, yknow? Everything has to go through lawyers and management. I dont know. AD: He's a drummer by nature. AD: I like the albums I've done with the Starship, of course. RM: I presume you could have your choice of drum companies. So I find it better to listen to what is being played on the top and then react to that. No. If I had started two years earlier, I would have gone out and taken lessons, but by this time, I was too shy and I didn't feel confident. _[laughs] _Okay? The following are excerpts from the interview with Singer by Ultimate Classic Rock: Theyd tried to work with Eric on two separate occasions, but he wasnt well enough. Journey made three records for Columbia with that line up. Theyre all magical to me. Well, I thinklooking back, I was sort of a workaholic. But I needed to go home. RM: The Starship rhythm section is really solid. You think? So I got a basic instinct for listening to leads, whether it be a guitar solo or the lyric. And the tickets have already been sold. I didnt need any of the other affirmations. You can only repeat the same structure over and over so many times before it gets monotonous. I still miss his playing. Then I was playing lead lines on the violin. When someones fingers get calluses on them, the guitar doesnt hurt so bad. Youve gotta print your question and my response, because I think its so humorous that such a question is even asked. Every song the band did lasted about 25 minutes, and they were all the same structure head; solos; head. He has worked with John Mayall, Frank Zappa, Jeff Beck, Journey, Jefferson Starship, Nils Lofgren, Eric Burdon, Shuggie Otis, Ian Hunter, Lou Reed, David B read more. I had to spend some time doing something which didn't take too much mental thought-something I could just have fun with. As soon as I went backstage after the Berkeley concert, the crew and band told me that Aynsley and Terry were there hanging out. After the tour, they got back in touch and asked me about being in the band, because Eric had unfortunately passed on. Im not whining. "Despite his image, Zappa was a very conservative chap," according to de Strulle who said that Zappa disapproved of Dunbar's sex, drugs, and rock'n'roll lifestyle. I just needed to stop. You must put that in there, the preface, because its important. And he pretty much came back and said, Yknow, this is a personal issue, and Im not gonna be pushed in a corner to get my hip fid. And I think what Steve felt at that point that he wanted to fold the band and go back to working on his grandfathers ranch. But he was nice enough to call me, so I thought I'd go on down and listen to him. The manager, Herbie, fought for me to be in that band, when they werent sure. I guess its because maybe Id found a life. I used to play with a group called the Merseysippi Jazz Band. Cynthia's decades-long project first started in Chicago while . Whose decision was it? **You went on to make a string of hit records with Steve. But when I went through Liverpool on a tour with Zappa in 1971, out of all the people I knew in Liverpool, he was the only one who actually turned up backstage to shake my hand and say how well I was playing. I really had to let it all go. I wanted to play violin when I was seven, but my parents wouldn't buy me one because they thought I would just waste the time and money. NOTE: This interview was after the Gary Moore death. He started his professional career in Derry Wilkie and the Pressmen in 1963. There are different ways you can work it. The next day Jeff Beck called me and. PERRY: Yeah. Theyd play amazing chord changes, and wed all try to navigate and try to help us be great with each other, and when we were done, Jon and I would take just, empty tracks, with the melodies in my head, to his house, and I would sit there at the coffee table and sing the melodies, and we would skull out lyrics. We did it in a month, again, with some down time. Theyre all great. Would you ever be interested in doing regular studio work, such as commercials? Do you find that the smaller drums give more "punch"? It can make you just live your life in a state of insecurity and fear. Enjoy! Yeah., He knows he wasnt the only drummer considered for the role but he was surprised when Bruce Kulick later told him that one of his heroes, Aynsley Dunbar, had been auditioned and then ruled out. Listening to what he was doing, and listening to what we were doingit was like A to Z. I was goin, How are we gonna morph this together and make it work?. Cause we wanna get out there. That particular set of words. Of course, there are days when no matter how much waririing up you've done, your mind still doesn't want to do anything. So I was ready to go, go, go, and I think pretty much everybody else in the band was. I didn't have that under my belt. And he was playin, I think, nine Journey songs and three of his original songs. At thec morrient, I have Ludwig Rockers underneath, Canasonics on top, and Duralines on the bass drums. RM: What type of music was being played in Liverpool? I worked my whole frickin life to get to this point with these guys! He 'will sort of jump out and start putting ideas down which I often jump on. So it felt freeing at some level to be a free agent, in 98, cause the industry was really changing, and the Internet was becoming a big thing, and I thought, Gee, the futures kinda wide open. And then [laughs] then I just got this unbelievable freaky drive, which shows the neurosis of the singer-songwriter. So I thought about It, you know, and I went back home. On the third Journey album, I started using double bass drums. So that was a big part of the pressure? He said he was having health issues, and he needed to have hip replacement, and this and that. It was really great. Im sure I was a bitch to deal with. At some point, in all our lives, wed all contributed to that star on the ground. I believe I was a functioning alcoholic. It was crazy, but it was great. The traditional grip is more complicated, but it's easier for me to play. No. Ludwig has these cast hoops that fit perfectly. I always had the idea in mind that you never go to a big town unless you go with a band. Aynsley Dunbar, Court Case No. But it was just great. Even now, I need a teacher to drive me so I practice and advance more. Would you saythat your style has changed over the years or is it just the difference in the music you are playing? I did manage to learn a lot about music by looking at it and trying to discern what was going on. I was going to the fair in my home town. Theres nobody who plays like Neal Schon, to this day. Youd think that after a while, everybody would grow up and be able to talk, one on one. We toured probably nine, ten months a year, and the other two months that were left, we were in the studio making more new music, and then wed get right back out there. His exact words were, Youre some big shoes to fill, but we wanna get out there. And she gave him the message, he called me from there, and I said Maybe we should talk about getting back together, Id like to see what you think, lets have coffee when you get back. So we had coffee, talked about it, and he said, Well, we should get together with Neal and talk about it, and me and Neal and Jon had coffee, and that was kind of the beginning. Pete writes these big, off the wall, sort of English rock songs, with big dramatic openings and classical-type things. What was the deal with that? Be at my house at so- and-so, and have your drums there and we'll go up to the gig." I went from playing seven days a week with Mayall to one day a month with Beck. So Don Ellis called me and said Herbie wanted me to fly out and meet Neal. Did you feel betrayed, by the fact that theyd been looking at other vocalists? Was that frustrating for you, that he sort of pulled out like that? Jimi would come down and sit in with Retaliation and we would have a ball. Once I lock into a song, the rest of the band comes together fast, so I've decided that it's my job to learn the arrangement and then just play it. During one of my first gigs with them, they gave me a drum solo. RM: You're not opposed to electronic percussion in principle? So I went to Toronto and looked at the charts, and then went to London to work on Lou Reed's Berlin album. Even if you get a loose tension rod, it will still keep the tone of the drum because it's so well cast that the rods on either side of the loose one will keep the head seated perfectly. And I only wish to protect it, because it means something to them, like it means something to me. I practically learned to play them on stage. I'm definitely thinking about doing it, but I want to have a plan of approach. We redid everything. He could have picked Tony Bennettthe greatest voice! So I did. So I decided to try drums. By the time you damp a larger drum, you'll end up with a 20" head anyway. Don Ellis, who was running the west coast side of Columbia at the time, heard the tape and really liked the group. For about 5 years, every day I'd get out of bed and do exercises, and then I'd do one arm push-ups to pump blood into my arms before I went on stage. And so I started a long process, seeing many doctors, and the guys got impatient. I really dont. There was several medical, non-surgical choices, and I tried all of those. I completely understand their reluctance. Dunbar was asked by Kantner to leave in 1982, with Donny Baldwin taking his place in September. Everyone thought I would move back to L.A. , but the Starship required a drummer at that time so I joined them. They're bringing out electronic drum kits now, that you can play on stage. Im not. But the reason I do that is so I can listen back to all the things I played and pick out the parts that worked and sounded good. At times it was wonderful, but it had been a long time, together. And I think without the year off, I wouldnt ever have gotten to that place. We were all lovin it. I look over at the bar, and they're all sitting by the bar drinking! Sure. This is what I wanna do. I think it was in Denver, Coloradothey were opening for Emerson, Lake and Palmer at the time. ManagementHerbie was freakin out, he was lovin it. Thats about all. Weve always had a difference of opinion in that area. When a drummer gets calluses on his hands, they no longer chafe and they no longer blister, and thats fantastic. He was a member of John Mayall's Bluesbreakers, along with Peter Green & John McVie who would form Fleetwood Mac. Did they give you any advice? I sat in the balcony and had Peter Green and John McVie with him. He was the drummer for eleven Frank Zappa albums. So at the end of a night, you feel great. I just told somebody that, a couple weeks ago, a writer that Im working withmy own voice is sometimes difficult to hear. Oh no! And Jon Cain and I used to spend hours together, doing lyrics. I think back in the day, there was a decision, by a couple of key editors, to never give us our just desserts. RM: Do you have a set of pads in your dressing room? We just try not to talk about him. He is the major soloist in the band. So I went out with Flo and Eddie, working as the opening act for Alice Cooper. He hugged me, I hugged him, and he said a few things in my earthat are mine, Im not gonna mention em. It was a nightly thing for me when I was on tour. And I said, I am _not _gonna tour and sit on a stool. The guitar solos are note for note just like the album. RM: Have you experimented with any electronic percussion? Cause I thought it was silly. I had not opened that up in over ten years. GQ: Journey had already made three records by the time you joined the band. **. We were all sitting in a room and Frank said, "Whoever comes through that door next will play bass in the movie," and Martin [Lickert] walked in. Are you not allowed to talk about him on the record? They couldn't see any further than where they were at. To cut out the over-ring on the bass drums, I have them lined with half- inch thick foam rubber . I cant tell you when, but Im gonna get it done. It was suggested that I could tour and sit on a stool. After talking to Jon and Neal, I went back to my home town for a while, and I started doing things that people didnt understand. So they put up with it for about 4 1/2 years before they told me to get out. But in those days, if we took a month off from the road, I would jump into a side project. AD: A funny thing happened with that. I did a one-off record with Sammy Hagar. And he was there for a brief time, until Herbie heard my tape and convinced them that they were gonna have to move from him to me. [laughs] Please. So[long pause] when we did the VH1 thing, I said there was quite some time where I never really felt part of the band. I suppose the first Journey album was interesting as well. They finally gave up and got me one, but by that time it was too late. I wasnt sure what the Sopranos use was gonna be. I also played with Jimi Hendrix. Actually Jonathan Cain tried to go down and go in and see him in San Francisco and they wouldnt let him in the building! Electronically, you have to be careful with that because you've got electronic components in there that are going to get smashed if you hit them too hard. And he will not allow me to have his number. You broke out of prison, and immediately started thinking about how to get back in. The band is getting better and better, and with everyone writing, I have more opportunities to play different feelings on songs.
