It is especially important for sea level to remain relatively unchanged during barrier island formation and growth. This spit developed under a high-energy wave climate. The greatest change in the dimensions of the New Jersey barriers due to development is the dramatic increase in the width of dry surface area through filling of the marshes. Each barrier island can be divided into four zones, including the ocean shoreline, the sand dunes, the back barrier and tidal inlets and deltas. Some dunes and vegetated areas were smothered by sand inundation. West of the Mississippi River delta, different barriers have formed along the muddy coast. Although coastal systems tend not to be recognized as Critical Zone environments, the evolution of Barrier Islands and the ecological functions they provide can be characterized in terms of a complex feedback among sediment supply (lithosphere), hydrology, the atmosphere, and ecology (biosphere). This represents an interesting departure from the traditional view of Barrier Island evolution (either regression or transgression) as a result of variations in sea level, sediment supply, and accommodation space. The result of human activity on the New Jersey shore has been an increase in the number of buildings subject to storm hazards, accompanied by a decrease in the role of natural processes of sand transport and storage on the islands or the likelihood that they will migrate. Because the continental shelf along the Atlantic coast is wide and not very steep, these sediments remained in the coastal zone and could be shaped by ocean waves and currents. But once the glaciers melted, the ocean level rose and flooded the river valleys. Vegetation is also common. There are no barrier islands along the Pacific coast of the United States due to its rocky shoreline and short continental shelf. Rapid sea-level rise could lead to flooding of the area landward of the ridge, possibly along the estuary of a major river, to produce a lagoon while ongoing wave and aeolian processes act to maintain the ridge and associated beach. They usually occur in chains, consisting of anything from a few islands to more than a dozen. This will allow high amounts of organic-rich mud to form. The presence of significant amounts of sediment, in concert with wave and current action and stable sea level, results in the formation of barriers in many coastal regions. Shallow offshore areas have generally lost sand since the beginning of development in the mid nineteenth century, but the back beach and dunes have undergone less erosion since development, and several barriers even have accretional trends. These barriers are typically attached to some type of a headland commonly a bluff of bedrock or glacial drift. Inlet sediment bypassing along this barrier chain occurs, in part, through the landward migration of large swash bars (>1km in length) that deliver up to 300000m3 of sand when they weld to the beach.
